A Two-component Explosion Model for the Giant Flare and Radio Afterglow from Sgr1806-20

چکیده
The brightest giant flare from the soft γ-ray repeater (SGR) 1806-20 was detected on 2004 December 27. The isotropic-equivalent energy release of this burst is at least one order of magnitude more energetic than those of the two other SGR giant flares. Starting from about one week after the burst, a very bright (∼ 80 mJy), fading radio afterglow was detected. Follow-up observations revealed the multi-frequency light curves of the afterglow and the temporal evolution of the source size. Here we show that these observations can be understood in a two-component explosion model. In this model, one component is a relativistic collimated outflow responsible for the initial giant flare and the early afterglow, and another component is a subrelativistic wider outflow responsible for the late afterglow. We also discuss triggering mechanisms of these two components within the framework of the magnetar model. متن کاملThe Growth, Polarization, and Motion of the Radio Afterglow from the Giant Flare from SGR1806-20
The extraordinary giant flare (GF) of 2004 December 27 from the soft gamma repeater (SGR) 1806-20 was followed by a bright radio afterglow. We present an analysis of VLA observations of this radio afterglow from SGR1806-20, consisting of previously reported 8.5 GHz data covering days 7 to 20 after the GF, plus new observations at 8.5 and 22 GHz from day 24 to 81. We detect motion in the flux ce...
متن کاملThe Giant Flare from SGR1806-20 and its Radio Afterglow
The multi-wavelength observations of the 2004 December 27 Giant Flare (GF) from SGR 1806−20 and its long-lived radio afterglow are briefly reviewed. The GF appears to have been produced by a dramatic reconfiguration of the magnetic field near the surface of the neutron star, possibly accompanied by fractures in the crust. The explosive release of over 10 erg (isotropic equivalent) powered a one...
متن کاملGiant Flares as Mini Gamma Ray Bursts
On December 27, 2004, practically all gamma-ray satellites were saturated by a giant flare from SGR1806−20 (Borkowski et al. 2004; Hurley et al. 2004; Mazets et al. 2004). This giant flare was strong enough to affect our ionosphere (Campbell et al. 2005) and for its reflection from the moon to be detected (Golenetskii et al. 2004). It was followed by an extremely bright radio afterglow, with an...
متن کاملTitle The radio afterglow from the giant flare of SGR 1900+14: The same mechanism as afterglows from classic gamma-ray bursts?
A radio afterglow was detected following the 1998 August 27 giant flare from the soft gamma repeater (SGR) 1900 14. Its short-lived behavior is quite different from the radio nebula of SGR 1806 20, but very similar to radio afterglows from classic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Motivated by this, we attempt to explain it with the external shock model as invoked in the standard theory of GRB afterglow...
